Describe how to name ports

Ports need to have useful names, which is not so easy to do. It's similar to naming parameters to a function, but that's not so easy either. This needs a bit of thought, can we come up with some good rules or even a naming scheme? Is it state or boundary conditions, in or out, which part of the state, units?
