An alternative to some of those customization would be a more general notion of "profiles" to pre-define different types of templates in addition to posts, each with a default directory, format and default front matter.
I'm thinking in, for example, having a separate "notes" section on a website, which would default to a different directory, a different filename pattern (e.g. using the date instead of a title slug) and maybe different front matter too.
