When do I use MorphoSource?
When 3D models or scans of FMNH collections need to be shared publicly, MorphoSource provides a robust platform for displaying media in the context of related collections data:
How do I use MorphoSource?
For FMNH Collections Staff, and non-FMNH MorphoSource Contributors:
FAQ below from MorphoSource/FMNH FAQs | last updated 2-Nov-2022
Who has permission to add FMNH scans to Morphosource?
Under Morphosource Terms of Use (#4), contributors are only permitted to upload what they have documented permission to upload.
If someone permitted to access FMNH collections was also permitted to scan and/or construct 3D models of those collections, they are permitted to upload their scans/models to MorphoSource.
How should Contributors transfer uploads to the FMNH on MorphoSource?
Signing the Media Agreement would transfer copyright to the FMNH as well as document your attribution preference and any embargo/timeline needed prior to publishing the data. More information is in the Media Agreement FAQ.
On MorphoSource, when you upload and link media to corresponding FMNH specimens or Teams:
MorphoSource should prompt you to transfer the FMNH-related media to the corresponding FMNH Team either immediately or upon publishing it.
Once a "Transfer Request" is generated and accepted on the FMNH-side, the MorphoSource media records will be updated:
Which Publication status should FMNH media have?
Private - for embargoed media
Restricted Download - for non-embargoed media
More about publication statuses
Who is responsible for embargoing records in MorphoSource?
Researchers currently retain edit-access to data/media they upload to MorphoSource, and they currently share responsibility with MorphoSource FMNH Team Managers for setting the appropriate publication status after transferring it to the FMNH.
If a scan of an FMNH specimen on MorphoSource is embargoed, researchers should set its publication status to "Private." Other Morphosource users can't find or view Private records, nor can they submit download requests for them. e.g.:
If FMNH Morphosource media is not embargoed, its publication status is set to "Restricted Download."
If you are a Download Request Reviewer, you will only receive download requests for 'Restricted Download' records.
Where can I get more info about MorphoSource for Collections Staff?
