These operating systems are not Unix-like but are worth mentioning
- OS-9
- Written by Microware in 1979 for the Motorola 6809 microprocessor
- Is still available today as OS-9000 for 32bit
- I used this in the late 80's to early 90's on a TRS-80 CoCo III computer using the Motorola 6809 CPU
- Was a very decent OS with a good desktop environment
- OS/2
- IBM operating system for the PC that was intended to replace PC DOS
- Was technically superior to Microsoft Windows but failed to penetrate the consumer market
- Microsoft Windows POPULAR
- #1 desktop OS in the world but losing share each year to MacOS
- My biggest compliments for this OS are
- Supports nearly all hardware
- Very good filesystem
- Very stable (Windows 10 and 11 only)
- Gets all the best GPU drivers
- All software is available for this OS
- Very customizable
- The best video games are released on this OS
- My biggest complaints of this OS are:
- Highly insecure, viruses and malware run rampant, although Win11 addresses this rather well
- Draconian practices by Microsoft to spy on customers
- Kernel is inefficient
- Registry is just an awful idea
- Not POSIX compliant, but WSL addresses this somewhat
- Was terrible for scripting, but now it uses WSL which is awesome
- Versions of Windows and my opinion on them
- 1 and 2 - never touched them
- 3 - Used at work, it was awful. crashed all the time. looked awful.
- 95 - Used at work, it was slightly less awful than 3
- 98 - Used at work, it was slightly less awful than 95
- 2000 - Used personally and at work. the NT kernel crashes way less than the old one.
- XP - Used personally and at work. Crashed slightly less than 2000
- Vista - Did not use. Was considered a failed release.
- 7 - Used personally and at work. Fairly stable. Mostly usable. I started to like this OS finally.
- 8 - Did not use. Was considered a failed release.
- 10 - Used personally and at work. Very stable and usable. I can use this OS and not hate it.
- 11 - Used personally. Seems very stable. Looks nicer than 10. Has improved on the virus and malware issue.
