What is a legal metric path component (the strings between dots)?

We have a Whisper file with one of its directories containing a comma (,).
It returns an empty result to Grafana.
The carbonapi log reports it as a success but returns a respond size of 2 bytes.

I've not found something in doc, the closest piece of info is this.
