Hardware flow control

In an existing application multiple COM ports are used to sense a button being pressed, on an 8-port serial extender there is one button per port where the button shorts pin 7 & 8 (CTS & RTS).

I would like to replicate this behaviour... with less bulk.
I have tried looking into the code to no avail, would it be possible to set the CTS as the client?

I believe that would achieve the effect i'm after but I don't feel too knowledgeable on this subject.
