Whitespace above/below plots in pdfs generated by Quarto

When I render to pdf, my 'tmap' plots have excessive white space above and below the plot. I have tried multiple ways to try and remove this (altering figure size / saving and importing figure as a png / reducing figure extents). This is impacting the 10 page max limit because the my report should be 10 pages comfortably, if it weren't for all the excess white space. 

Quick answer: absolutely fine to use the Quarto -> docx -> pdf solution, a clever fix I think and still reproducible.

This is a common issue and could be considered a bug in Quarto I think. I don't have any quick answers but from a search can direct you to some discussion of potential solutions that may or may not work:
