I personally use stutter for Firefox but these ideas certainly apply to any browser choice:
Progress Bar: allow a defaulted option to show a progress bar in close periphery. I've seen this before on speed readers and it makes for very nice ux. The cost/payoff is high here.
Highlighted text on body: allow option to have currently read word to become highlighted within the body allowing users to pause reading, find the context on the page, and re-read at their leisure. Point being to more fully absorb complex content.
Moving body: rather than bring words to the user, use basic math to place the current word directly in the center of the screen. With creating a focal point by gaussian circle fading to darkened background this theoretically accomplishes 1 & 2 together. It's no doubt a questionable cost/payoff but it's a good thought-experiment nonetheless.
I'm happy to help out with any of these features but my time is swamped with a never-ending list of projects / contributions.
Cheers,
Jackson
-- EDIT --
Syke, the progress bar is there but faint. Maybe a lower profile option? I'm thinking 1/10th the height with a color matching the centered letter. Just an idea.
