Is there a limit to the state_icons that can be used?

I am wondering whether anyone has had any issues with using more that 6 state_icons?

Example, I am trying to use paper buttons for a weather chip card, and want to have the icon change as the state changes. There are over a dozen states I want to define within state_icon:, but anything over 6 seems to render the rest of the configuration unusable.

Any ideas?
