Either way, step into our little Factory of Happiness and share something you value with a friend you have not met yet. And to maintain the balance of “Make or Break”, label your balloon with something you think needs breaking. Your balloon is your ticket into the balloon pit where you can search and discover, play and exchange! Pop in! Your balloon is waiting; someone has already prepared a message for you!

The project was an interactive exhibit, featuring a large balloon pit where visitors engaged in an exchange of encouraging and positive messages. The main idea was to encourage people to share bits of themselves in a playful and safe environment. Using the concept of ‘a mysterious message in a bottle’, or, in our case, a message in a balloon, we created an experience filled with wonder: it not only enabled self-expression but made it a rewarding experience by giving something back. On a bigger scale, we wanted to raise an idea of an exchange as a way to balance creation and consumption. We wanted to prove that it’s the small, kind gestures that echo back to us, and leave a wonderful impression on us. To help people find the ‘right’ balloon in the sea of options, we asked participants to label the balloon containing their message with something they believe needs breaking (like bodyshaming or extra costs for guac). We believe that humans care, not just for themselves, but for the community and the world we are living in. And every single person that took part in this experience proved us right.

Evaluation

People were very happy to write beautiful, encouraging messages for a stranger. They confirmed that the whole process of making, breaking, and receiving something was a rounded and very positive experience. Many people held their message to their heart, saying, it’s like receiving a message from a soul mate. Many raised social and environmental issues such as homelessness and pollution, which is a courageous gesture, as it inspired people to be more aware of their immediate surroundings.

The playful atmosphere of the activity allowed the participants to express themselves freely, creatively, cheerfully and spread this mood to other people whilst at the same time being mindful and serious about their intentions. But making an encouraging message was not the only idea of this activity. Labeling the balloons turned the whole activity into something therapeutic: symbolically destroying something another person has wrote was an empowering and satisfying moment. The setting of this activity attracted young and old, introverts and extroverts alike and enhanced wonder, joy, and hope. The playful nature of the installation created a memorable experience for all participants and engaged over 630 people within a time span of 16 hours.
