Pyenv

pyenv is used in the workflow for managing python environments: Used mainly with macOS & NOT WINDOWS. Use [[virtualenv]] instead for Windows OS.

Installing new python versions in pyenv

Installing latest python version in pyenv:

# First check list of pyenv versions available and your versions
pyenv install --list

pyenv versions

# Choose version and install
pyenv install -v 3.9.6

# If versions not found, try updating pyenv with 
brew update && brew upgrade pyenv

Switching global python version

You can find the pyenv versions installed on your computer with the pyenv versions command.

pyenv global <VersionNumber>

To set up pyenv correctly, you can run the following in Bash or zsh: (I had to use this command because pyenv global would not change my python -V version)

# Run exactly with `$(pyenv root)` as below--don't replace it with anything
PATH=$(pyenv root)/shims:$PATH

Initializing a new virtual python environment in project

which python3.7
# /Users/THEJAGSTER/.pyenv/shims/python3.7

# The following will create a virtual python environment in project directory
virtualenv -p /Users/THEJAGSTER/.pyenv/shims/python3.7 env

# Switch to using & activating the environment within terminal
source env/bin/activate

# See if python version has changed
python --version
# Python 3.7.9

# Stop the venv by using the following command
deactivate
