\begin{abstract}
Completing a metric space using equivalence classes of Cauchy sequences is a standard approach. Another approach is to use ultrafilters. The approach of this paper is to do something somewhat intermediate between them. A point in the completed space will be an object, called an oracle, which says Yes or No when presented with a ball in the metric space. It says Yes if the completed point ought to be in it and No otherwise. The contractive fixed point theorem is established in this context as a demonstration of the similarities and differences of this approach to the standard approach. The paper finishes with some thoughts on more generic topological spaces where this approach can be used to explore quotient spaces and compactifications of Hausdorff spaces.

\section{Introduction}
Our primary task is to explore how to complete metric spaces using the notion of oracles. Oracles are defined on a collection of containers of points in a space. For completing the rationals to real numbers, these containers were inclusive rational intervals, including singleton intervals consisting of exactly one rational. For metric spaces, the containers will be nominally closed balls with the data being the center point and the radius. For more general topological spaces, these ideas lead to the well-trodden theory of ultrafilters \cite{samuel}. But metric spaces allow for slightly simpler structures to consider.
This idea is based on, but not dependent on, the idea of viewing real numbers as oracles. Namely, that a real number is an object that identifies whether a real number is between two given rational numbers or not. See \cite{taylor23main} for the full details and \cite{taylor23teaser} for a very brief overview of it.
In a separate work, \cite{taylor23maudlin}, these ideas will be pursued in the context of the theory of Linear Structures, a recent alternative topological framework put forth by Tim Maudlin \cite{maudlin}. The idea of Linear Structures is that lines are fundamental to physical spaces and can be a better unifying notion across finite, discrete, dense, and complete spaces than the standard notion of open sets. The concept of betweenness is essential in that work and this makes the ideas of oracles a natural fit.
\section{Filters}
Here we briefly define what a filter will be for us and useful filter related definitions. Filters are generally presented as a collection of sets that satisfy a set of properties to allow for a partial ordering. We will present a slightly different view of this though, at base, it is the same.
A realm of containers is a defined set of objects that have an ability to say when there is overlap between the two objects and also have the ability to say when one object contains another. Set containment and set intersection are the foundations of this idea, but we often try to formulate it more on the level of rules rather than set element checking.
A rule on a realm of containers is a function which takes in a container and returns Yes or No, also coded as 1 or 0, respectively. A Yes-container is a container for which the rule says Yes on it. A No-container is one which the rule says No.
A filter-rule is a rule on a realm of containers which satisfies:

\item Consistency. If $A$ contains $B$ and $B$ is a Yes-container, then $A$ is a Yes-container.
\item Existence. There exists a container $A$ which is a Yes-container.
\item Overlapping. If $A$ and $B$ are Yes-containers, then $A$ and $B$ overlap as containers.
\end{enumerate}
A filter-rule is proper if there exists at least one No container. All of the filter-rules we consider will be proper.
A filter-rule $R$ extends the filter-rule $S$ if a container being Yes for $S$ implies it is Yes for $R$. A filter is a maximal filter if it cannot be extended by any proper filter-rule.
The idea of a filter is that one is trying to filter out irrelevant bits and zoom in on the object of concern. A rooted maximal filter is one in which there is a single container that is contained in all the other containers. A neighborly maximal filter is one which has no root, that is, there is no Yes-container contained in all the other Yes containers.\footnote{A maximal filter is essentially an ultra-filter, a rooted maximal filter is essentially a principal ultra-filter, and a neighborly maximal filter is essentially a free ultra-filter. We use different terms as the standard terms generally represent set constructs and we are focusing on rule-based concepts. }
\section{Metric Spaces}
Given a dense metric space, we can complete it by considering containment in balls. In completing the real numbers, we used the Interval Separation property, namely, that in splitting a Yes interval, one would generally find one subinterval to be Yes and the other No. The exception was exactly when the partitioning rational was the root of the oracle, in which case both subintervals would be Yes as well as the singleton interval.
For a general metric space, that property does not seem to have an analog. But an alternative property is the Two Point Separation Property which is roughly that given two points, we can find a Yes-ball that does not include one of those points. This is a way of expressing that the oracle is converging on just one point. The downside of this property is that it is a little less constructive than the Interval Separation Property in that it just wills the existence of a Yes-ball rather than being presented with choices to check.
A metric space is a set $E$ equipped with a distance function, $d$, which takes in pairs of points from $E$ and returns a non-negative number. We will use $d_E$ if we need to distinguish different distance functions for different metric spaces. A distance function must be symmetric, non-negative, and is zero exactly when computing the distance from a point to itself. In addition, it must satisfy the triangle inequality $d(x,y) \leq d(x,y) + d(y,z)$.
A ball is specified by a point $c$ (the center) and a radius $r$. It is a rule $B[c,r]$ such that $B[c,r](q) = 1$ if and only if the distance $d(c,q) \leq r$; we say that $q$ is contained in $B[c,r]$ and may write $q \in B[c,r]$ to indicate that. The radius is generally taken to be non-negative real numbers though non-negative rationals would be sufficient for most of our purposes. If we name a ball $A$, for example, then we will denote its radius as $r_A$ and its center as $c_A$. Two balls $A$ and $B$ are disjoint if there does not exist any point $q$ that is contained in both $A$ and $B$. They are separated if the separation $s_{A,B} = d(c_A, c_B) - r_A - r_B > 0$. In that case, every pair of $a \in A$ and $b \in B$, we have $d(a,b) \geq s_{A,B}$ by the Triangle Inequality ($d(c_A, c_B) \leq d(c_A, a) + d(a,b) + d(c_B, b) \leq r_A + d(a,b) + r_B$). Two balls can be disjoint and not separated if the balls are not full from missing regions of the space in terms of the metric.
The intuition of one ball $B$ being inside another ball $A$ is that $B(p) = 1$ implies $A(p) = 1$. We will say $A$ contains $B$ in that case. But when we say that $B$ is strictly contained in $A$ or that $A$ strictly contains $B$, it will mean that $d(c_A, c_B) + r_B < r_A$. This does imply that if $p$ is in $B$, then $p$ is in $A$ as $d(c_A, p) \leq d(c_A, c_B) + d(c_B, p) \leq d(c_A,c_B) + r_B < r_A$. It does not imply, however, that all balls that satisfy the set containment are strictly contained in $A$ by the distance condition. We are essentially demanding a gap between the contained ball and the boundary of the containing ball. In particular, $m = r_A - d(c_A,c_B) - r_B > 0$ is the \textbf{moat} of $B$ in $A$. Any two balls which have the same center but different radii will have the property that the one with the smaller radii has a moat in the larger one. Strict containment is transitive.
We do consider balls of the form $B[p, 0]$. As a point set, this is just the set containing $p$. They represent $p$ and will be the roots of rooted maximal filters. For ease of statements, we consider balls of radius 0 to be strictly contained in themselves. They are strictly contained in another ball $B[c, r]$ if and only if $d(c, p) < r$.
Our first primary interest will be with dense regions in a metric space. A region is \textbf{dense} if for any given point $c$ in the region, and any radius $r>0$, there exists a point $q \in E$ such that $q \neq c$ and $q$ is in $B[c,r]$. An \textbf{isolated point $c$} is a point in which there exists an \textbf{isolating} ball $B[c, r]$, $r > 0$, with the property that $c$ is the only point in the ball. Necessarily, if $0 < s < r$, then $B[c, s]$ is also an isolating ball and identical as a point set to both $B[c,r]$ and $B[c,0]$. Note that by our definition, despite them being all the same point-set, we do have that $B[c,s]$ is moated in $B[c,r]$.
\section{Neighborly Oracles in a Metric Space}
We can now give our definition of a neighborly oracle for a metric space $E$. The Oracle of $\alpha$ is a rule defined on balls that decides on whether they are a Yes-ball or No-ball and satisfies:
\begin{enumerate}
\item Consistency. If ball $B$ strictly contains $C$ and $C$ is a Yes-ball, then $B$ is a Yes-ball.
\item Existence. There exists $B$ such that $B$ is a Yes-ball.
\item Intersecting. If $B$ and $C$ are Yes-balls, then there is a ball that is strictly contained in both $B$ and $C$.
\item Two Point Separation. Given a Yes-ball $B$ and two points in $B$, then there is a Yes-ball strictly contained in $B$ which does not contain at least one of the given points.
\item Closed. If a point $p$ is in all Yes balls, then $B[p,0]$ is a Yes ball.
\end{enumerate}
The first three items are ensuring that this is a filter in the realm of containers that are balls where containment is strict containment and intersection is the overlapping with a strictly contained ball in the overlap.
The last two items are what ensures it narrows down to a given point. The Closed property ensures that existing points are contained in the oracles.
As we will later explain, the oracle presentation is equivalent to looking at a maximal family of overlapping, notionally shrinking balls (fonsbs). The oracle presentation is preferred to emphasize the querying nature of it, but the fonsbs often naturally arise and are sufficient to know what oracle is being discussed.
\subsection{Rooted Oracles}
The first example of an oracle is that of the oracles that contain an existing point. Namely, let $p \in E$. Then the Oracle of $p$ is defined as the set of all balls that strictly contain $P = B[p,0]$ and we add in $P$ as well. We can quickly establish that it is an oracle.

\item Consistency. If a ball $B$ strictly contains a ball $C$ and $C$ is a Yes-ball, then $C$ strictly contains $P$. Thus, $B$ strictly contains $P$ and is therefore a Yes-ball.
\item Existence. $B[p, r]$ for any $r \geq 0$ is an example. Such balls are not empty as they contain $p$.
\item Intersecting. They both strictly contain $P$.
\item Two Point Separation. $P$ is strictly contained in any of the Yes balls and contains one point. Thus, this property is satisfied.
\item Closed. $P$ is explicitly contained it.
\end{enumerate}
We have established that there is a natural injection from $E$ into the space of Oracles of $E$, namely, $p$ is mapped to the Oracle of $p$. Note that the Oracle of $q$ and the Oracle of $p$ are distinct if $p \neq q$ since $B[p,0]$ and $B[q,0]$ are disjoint and will be Yes for their own Oracle, but No for the other one.
We say an oracle $\alpha$ is \textbf{rooted} at $p$ if $\alpha$ is the Oracle of $p$. If $p$ is contained in all Yes balls, then we claim that it is the Oracle of $p$. The Closed property tells us that under these conditions, $B[p, 0]$ is a Yes-ball. Consistency then implies that all balls that strictly contain $B[p,0]$ are Yes balls. Furthermore, the Intersection property implies that all Yes-balls must intersect $B[p,0]$ which implies they contain it. Thus, it is the Oracle of $p$.
Furthermore, if an isolating ball of $p$ is a Yes-ball for an oracle, then it is also the Oracle of $p$. Indeed, because of the Intersection property, all the Yes balls have to intersect with the isolating ball which means they contain $p$. By the Closed property, we then have $B[p,0]$ as a Yes ball which implies it is the Oracle of $p$.
\subsection{The Narrowing Property}
An equivalent replacement for the Two Point Separation Property is the Narrowing Property: Given any Yes-ball $B$ for the oracle $\alpha$ and real number $\varepsilon >0$, we can find a Yes-ball whose diameter is less than $\varepsilon$ and is strictly contained in $B$.

If we have the Narrowing Property, then we can choose a Yes-ball strictly contained in the given ball whose radius is strictly less than half the distance between the two points. This ball will not be able to contain both points since the distance between any two points $p, q$ in a ball $B[c, r]$ is $d(p,q) \leq d(p, c) + d(q,c) \leq 2r$. Thus, if $ r < \frac{d(q,p)}{2}$, then the previous fact implies that if $p$ and $q$ were in the ball $B[c, r]$, then $d(p,q) \leq 2 r < 2\frac{d(p,q)}{2} = d(p,q)$ which is not possible.
For the other direction, let $B_0 = B[c_0, r_0]$ be the initial Yes-ball. Assume $B_i = B[c_i, r_i]$ is defined and a Yes-ball. We proceed as follows.
If $B[c_i, \frac{r_i}{3}]$ is an isolating ball, then $B[c_i, 0]$ works as the desired ball and we are done. This includes the case of $r_i = 0$.
If it is not an isolating ball, then we choose a point $p$ in $B[c_i, \frac{r_i}{3}]$ which is not $c_i$; the existence of such a point is what it means to not be isolating.
Apply the Two Point Separation Property to $c_i$ and $p$. Let $B_{i+1} = B[c_{i+1}, r_{i+1}]$ be the Yes-ball that excludes at least one of them and is strictly contained in $B_i$.
We wish to argue that $r_{i +1} \leq \frac{2r_i}{3}$. Let $a = d(c_{i+1}, c_i)$.
We proceed by cases:
\begin{itemize}
\item $a \geq \frac{r_i}{3}$. As $B_{i+1}$ is strictly contained in $B_i$, our presumption on what that means implies that $r_{i+1} + a < r_i$ implying $ r_{i+1} < \frac{2 r_i}{3}$.
\item $a < \frac{r_i}{3}$, $c_i$ is excluded from $B_{i+1}$. Then, $r_{i+1} \leq a < \frac{r_i}{3} < \frac{2 r_i}{3}$.
\item $a < \frac{r_i}{3}$, $c_i$ is included, but $p$ is excluded. This implies that $r_{i+1} \leq d(p, c_{i+1})$. Using the triangle inequality, we have $d(p, c_{i+1}) \leq d(p, c_i) + d(c_i, c_{i+1}) \leq \frac{r_i}{3} + a < \frac{2r_i}{3}$
\end{itemize}
Inductively, we have that $r_i < \frac{2}{3}^i r_0$. Thus, given any $\varepsilon$, we can choose $n$ such that $n > \frac{\ln(\varepsilon) - \ln(r_0)}{\ln(2) - \ln(3)}$ which will guarantee that $B_n$ has a radius smaller than $\varepsilon$ and is strictly contained in $B_0$.

There is a strong sense in which each Yes-ball of an oracle contains all the much smaller Yes-balls.

Let $A$ be a Yes ball of the oracle $\alpha$. If $A$ is isolated, then all Yes balls less than the radius $r_A$ are isolating since $p$ is the only point in the ball, all Yes balls must contain $p$, and to reach $p$, they must be at least as large as $r_A$.
Otherwise, we can pick a point in $A$ which is not equal to $c_A$. Then there exists a Yes-ball $B$ which excludes either $r_A$ or the random point and $B$ is strictly contained in $A$. Let $m = r_A - (d(c_A,c_B) + r_B)$ be the moat of $B$ in $A$. It is positive because $B$ is strictly contained in $A$. Any ball $D$ whose radius $r_D < \frac{m}{2}$ that intersects $B$ will be strictly contained in $A$ as we will now show.
Let $p$ be a point in the intersection. Consider $n = r_A - (d(c_A, c_D) + r_D)$. We need to show that this is positive. Since $r_D < \frac{m}{2}$, we have $n > r_A - (d(c_A, c_D) + \frac{m}{2}$. We also know $d(c_A, c_D) \leq d(c_A, c_B) + d(c_B, p) + d(p, c_D) < d(c_A, c_B) + r_B + \frac{m}{2}$ leading to $n > r_A - (d(c_A, c_B) + r_B + m) = 0 $. So $n$ is positive and $D$ is strictly contained in $A$.
Since every Yes ball intersects every other Yes ball, we have that if a Yes ball has radius strictly less than $\frac{m}{2}$, then it is strictly contained in $A$.

We also have that oracles cannot be extended into other oracles.

\section{Distance Between Oracles}
The distance can be defined as follows. Let $\alpha$ and $\beta$ be two oracles. Then $\underline{d}(\alpha,\beta)$ is defined as the real number oracle which is the infimum of the set of distances $d(A, B)$ where $A$ is a $\alpha$-Yes ball and $B$ is a $\beta$-Yes ball. The distance between two balls in the original space say with centers $c_A$ and $c_B$ and radii $r_A$ and $r_B$, respectively, is defined as $r_A + d(c_A,c_B) + r_B$. This should encompass the distances of the points within the ball. Indeed, let $a \in A$ and $b\in B$. Then $d(a, b) \leq d(a,c_A) + d(c_A,c_B) + d(c_B,b) \leq r_A + d(c_A,c_B) + r_B$ by application of the triangle inequality.\footnote{There need not be any points $a$ and $b$ such that $d(a,b) = d(A, B)$ due to the balls being incomplete. As a simple example, consider two isolated balls with different centers. Their distance as point sets will just be the distance of the centers since there are no other points in them. But the distance we have proposed here would add in the radii. For our purposes, we do not care much as we are interested in the radii shrinking to zero. }
We need to show that this is a distance function. The core difficulty is that of equality and so we will do a lemma for that first.

Let $A$ be an $\alpha$-Yes ball which is $\beta$-No and $B$ be a $\beta$-Yes, $\alpha$-No ball. They exist by Corollary $\ref{cor:yesno}$ and the fact that the oracles are different.
Let $A'$ be an $\alpha$-Yes ball strictly contained in $A$. Let $m_{AA'}$ be the moat of $A'$ in $A$. By the Narrowing property, there exists a $\beta$-Yes ball $B'$ strictly contained in $B$ with a radius less than $\frac{m_{AA'}}{3}$. Since every $\beta$-Yes ball intersects every $\alpha$-Yes ball, $A'$ and $B'$ intersect at a point $p$.
We claim that $B'$ is strictly contained in $A$ and this implies $A$ is a $\beta$-Yes ball. To show it is strictly contained, we need to show that $m{AB'} = r_A - (d(c_A, c_{B'}) + r_{B'})$ is positive. We can replace $d(c_A, c_{B'}) \leq d(c_A, c_{A'}) + d(c_{A'}, c_{B'}) \leq d(c_A, c_{A'}) + r_{A'} + r_{B'}$ leading to $m_{AB'} \geq r_A - (d(c_A, c_{A'}) + r_{A'}) - 2 r_{B'} \geq m_{AA'} - \frac{2 m_{AA'}}{3} = \frac{m_{AA'}}{3} > 0$. Thus, $B'$ is strictly contained in $A$ and so $A$ is $\beta$-Yes by Consistency.
Since we assumed $A$ was $\alpha$-Yes and $\beta$-No, this shows that we get a contradiction from that and $A$ is $\alpha$-Yes if and only if it is $\beta$-Yes (by relabelling, we can argue the reverse case).

Furthermore, by taking strictly contained Yes balls in the disjoint ones, we can easily see that we can assume having Yes balls that are positively separated.

\section{The Completion of \texorpdfstring{$E$}{E}}
We now wish to argue that the space of Oracles of $E$, denoted $\mathcal{O}_E$, is the Completion of $E$, denoted $\overline{E}$. This means that $E$ is contained in the space of oracles with the same distance between the points, that Cauchy sequences converge to a point in the space of oracles, $E$ is dense in the space of oracles, and applying this procedure again produces an equivalent space. These are all fairly easy to see.
The key item is, of course, that every Cauchy sequence has a limit. We will prove that first.
A \textbf{Cauchy sequence of oracles} is a sequence of oracles $\alpha_n$ such that given $\varepsilon > 0$, there exists $N$ such that $\underline{d}(\alpha_n, \alpha_m) < \varepsilon$ for all $n, m \geq N$. We call $N$ a Cauchy $N$ for $\varepsilon$ and may denote it $N_{\varepsilon}$. A sequence of oracles $\alpha_n$ has a limit oracle $\alpha$ if, given $\varepsilon > 0$, there exists $N$ such that $\underline{d}(\alpha, \alpha_n) < \varepsilon$ for all $n \geq N$. These are the usual notions.
If there is an oracle limit of a Cauchy sequence, then it is unique. The usual argument applies: Let $\alpha$ and $\beta$ be two such oracles. Then $\underline{d}(\alpha, \beta) \leq \underline{d}(\alpha, \alpha_n) + \underline{d}(\alpha_n, \beta)$. Since these are limit oracles, the $n$ can be chosen so that each distance is less than $\frac{\varepsilon}{2}$ implying the distance is less than $\varepsilon$. As that can be taken arbitrarily small, their distance is 0. But we established that this is a distance function which implies these oracles are the same.
Now we need to produce the existence of the oracle.

Additionally, we add in any singleton which is contained in all the neighborly Yes balls of $\alpha$.
We claim that this is an oracle and it is the limit of the Cauchy sequence.
Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Take $N = N_{\frac{\varepsilon}{2}}$ to be a Cauchy $N$ for $\frac{\varepsilon}{2} = \gamma$. Our goal is to find a ball $A$ which is a Yes ball for every $\alpha_n$, $n \geq N$, strictly contained in a ball of radius $\varepsilon$. By assumption, $\underline{d}(\alpha_N, \alpha_n) < \gamma$. This means there exists balls $A_{N,\gamma}$ and $A_{n, \gamma}$ such that $r_{A_{N, \gamma}} + d(c_{A_{N, \gamma}}, c_{A_{n, \gamma}}) + r_{A_{n,\gamma}} <\gamma$. This implies that $B_N = B(c_{A_{N, \gamma}}, \gamma)$ strictly contains $A_{n,\gamma}$. This is clear as what we need to show is that $r_{B_N} > d(c_{B_N}, c_{A_{n, \gamma}}) + r_{A_{n, \gamma}}$. But we have that $r_{B_N} = \gamma > r_{A_{N, \gamma}} + d(c_{A_{N, \gamma}}, c_{A_{n,\gamma}}) + r_{A_{n,\gamma}} \geq d(c_{A_{N, \gamma}}, c_{A_{n,\gamma}}) + r_{A_{n, \gamma}}$ and $c_{B_N} = c_{A_{N,\gamma}}$.
But we also have $B_N$ is strictly contained in the ball $C_N = B_{c_{A_N, \gamma}, \varepsilon}$ as $2 \gamma = \varepsilon$ and these balls have the same center. This implies that the $A_{n, \gamma}$ balls are strictly contained in $C_N$ all with moat at least $\frac{\varepsilon}{2}$. Thus, these are Yes balls of the limit oracle $\alpha$.\footnote{Note that to claim the existence of the sequence of the $C_N$ requires Countable Choice, but the existence of the oracle sidesteps this as it is an object that will produce such things upon demand.}
Consistency is clear from the definition as any ball that strictly contains a Yes ball of $\alpha$ will also strictly contain the Yes balls of $\alpha_n$ that being a Yes ball of $\alpha$ implies exists with an even larger moat for all the containing balls. Thus, the containing ball is also Yes.
Closed is clear because we added it. In practice, establishing that a point is in every Yes ball may be hard to accomplish.
Existence follows from what we established above applied to, say, $\varepsilon = 1$.
Intersecting follows from the fact that both will be Yes balls for $\alpha_n$ where $n$ is greater than the max of their two $N$'s. Thus, they intersect from being a part of that same oracle. For the possible singleton, it is only there if it is contained in all of the neighborly Yes balls and thus intersects with them. If we had two such singletons, then let their distance be $2\varepsilon$. We would then have the $C_N$ for $\varepsilon$ which would be unable to include them both.
Two point separation would be basically the same, but we need to require with the strictly contained part. We find it slightly more convenient to work with the Narrowing property. Let a Yes ball $B$ and $\varepsilon$ be given. If $B$ is a singleton, then it satisfies the property. Assume it is neighborly then. This implies that it uniformly strictly contains the tail of the sequence. Let $\delta > 0$ be the moat that works. Take $C_N$ from above to be the $N$ associated with $\min(\varepsilon, \frac{\delta}{3})$. Then $C_N$ is a Yes ball whose diameter is less than $\varepsilon$. We need to argue that it is strictly contained in $B$. Since $C_N$ contains the tail and the tail was uniformly contained in $B$ with moat $\delta$, $C_N$ must intersect those representative balls. Thus, its closest point to the edge of $B$ could at most be $\frac{\delta}{3}$ away from it implying strict containment.\footnote{More explicitly, the uniformly strictly contained implies the existence of $A_n$ for each $n$ such that $A_n= B[c_n, r_n]$ has moat at least $\delta$ in $B$. $C_N$ must intersect $A_n$ implying $r_B - d(c_B, c_{C_N}) - r_{C_N} \geq r_B - d(c_B, c_n) - d(c_n, c_{C_N}) - r_{C_N} \geq r_B - d(c_B, c_n) - d(c_n, p) - d(p, c_{C_N}) - r_{C_N} \geq r_B - d(c_B, c_n) - r_n - - 2r_{C_N} > \delta - \frac{2 \delta}{3} = \frac{\delta}{3}$. }
Next we show that this is the limit. Given $\varepsilon >0$, we take the $C_{N, \frac{\varepsilon}{2}} = C$ from above. Then $d(C, C) = \varepsilon$. Since $C$ is a Yes ball for both $\alpha$ and $\alpha_n$, $n \geq N$, we have that $\underline{d}(\alpha, \alpha_n) \leq \varepsilon$, as was needed to be shown.

\item Applying the oracle process to the space of oracles does not lead to a new space. By this we mean that the embedding of the oracle space into the meta oracle space is just itself. Instead of establishing this directly, we will establish a broader statement that this oracle process\footnote{There are potentially other kinds of oracle processes with different properties that can lead to different spaces.} applied to a complete metric space leads to the embedded space being the same.
Let $E$ be a complete metric space and let $\alpha \in \mathcal{O}_E$ be an oracle and $A_0$ be a Yes ball, guaranteed by existence. By the Narrowing property, we can associate each $N$ with a $\alpha$-Yes ball $A_N$ such that $A_N$ is strictly contained in $A_{N-1}$ and has radius $r_N < \frac{1}{N}$; this would generically require the axiom of countable choice. Let $c_N$ be the center of the ball $A_N$. Then the sequence $c_N$ is Cauchy in $E$ as $d(c_{n+m}, c_n) < r_n < \frac{1}{N}$. There is thus a point $c \in E$ such that $c$ is the limit of that sequence as $E$ is complete.
Our first claim about $c$ is that it is contained in $A_N$ for all $N$. Let $\delta$ be the moat of $A_{N+1}$ in $A_N$. Then, since $A_n$ is strictly contained in $A_{N+1}$ for all $n > N+1$, we have that $A_n$ has moat of at least $\delta$. Let $M > N+1$ be such that $d(c, c_M) < \frac{\delta}{2}$; this exists as $c$ is the limit of the sequence. But this then implies $d(c, c_N) \leq d(c, c_M) + d(c_M, c_N) \leq \frac{\delta}{2} + (r_N - \delta - r_{M}) = r_N - \frac{\delta}{2} - r_{M} < r_N$ where we used that $\delta$ was at least as large as the moat of $A_M$ in $A_N$ since $A_M$ was contained in $A_{N+1}$ whose moat was $\delta$. In any event, $c \in A_N$.
We then claim that the oracle of $c$, $c_{\mathcal{O}}$, is $\alpha$. To do this, we need to establish that $c$ is contained in every Yes ball of $\alpha$. Let $B$ be a Yes ball of $\alpha$. Then from Proposition \ref{prop:zcontain}, there exists a radius $z$ in which all Yes balls of that radius are strictly contained in $B$. Consider $N$ such that $\frac{1}{N} < z$. Then $A_N$ is strictly contained in $B$ and hence $c$ is as well.
Thus, $c$ is contained in every neighborly Yes ball of $\alpha$. By the Closed property, the singleton ball of $c$ is therefore a Yes ball as well. This makes $\alpha$ the Oracle of $c$ as we argued before when discussing rooted oracles.

\section{Family of Overlapping Notionally Shrinking Balls}
A Family of Overlapping, Notionally Shrinking Balls (fonsb) is a family of balls for which 1) every pair of balls in the family strictly contains a common ball in the family, 2) there is at least one ball in the family, and 3) the Narrowing Property holds for the family: Given any ball $A$ in the family and a $\varepsilon > 0$, there is a ball strictly contained in $A$ in the family whose radius is less than $\varepsilon$. Any such family can be uniquely completed to a maximal family, one which is equivalent to the Yes-balls of an oracle, as we will now demonstrate.

We also need to show that no other oracle could contain this fonsb.
Assume there was a different oracle that did contain this fonsb. Then there would exist a Yes-ball $B[c,r]$ of that oracle which does not contain $p$. This means that $d(c,p) > r$; let's say that the distance is $r +s$. Then, by the Narrowing property, there exists a ball in the fonsb such that its radius is less than $s/3$. Since it contains $p$ by assumption, the farthest point, say $q$, of the ball from $p$ has distance no more than $\frac{2s}{3}$. If $q$ was contained in the Yes-ball, then $d(c,q) \leq r$ and so $d(c, p) \leq d(c, q) + d(q,p) \leq r + \frac{2s}{3}$. But the distance was assumed to be $r + s$ which is a contradiction. Thus there is only one oracle that contains this fonsb.
The other case is that there is no point that is in common to all of the elements of the fonsb. That is, if $p$ is given, then we can find a ball $B$ in $\mathcal{B}$ which does not contain $p$.
In this case, we define the oracle as the rule that says Yes if a ball strictly contains a ball of the fonsb. We now argue that this is an oracle. Note that by the Narrowing property, this oracle does say Yes to all the balls in the fonsb as they strictly contain some balls of smaller size.

\item Intersection. Let $C_1$ and $C_2$ be two Yes-balls. Then there exists two fonsb balls $B_1$ and $B_2$ that are strictly contained in $C_1$ and $C_2$, respectively. By assumption of a fonsb, there exists a fonsb ball $A$ contained in $B_1$ and $B_2$. $A$ is a Yes-ball as it is in the fonsb and thus $C_1$ and $C_2$ both strictly contain the Yes-ball $A$.
\item Closed. Since there is no point contained in all of the elements of the fonsb and all of them are Yes-balls, there is no point contained in all of the Yes-balls of this oracle.

Since $A$ is $\alpha$-Yes, there exists an $\alpha$-Yes ball $A'$ strictly contained in $A$ which is also a member of $\mathcal{A}$ and such that its radius is less than a fourth of its moat in $A$; this can always be done as we can take the moat of a strictly contained Yes ball in $A$ and demand a strictly contained ball in that whose radius is smaller than the moat of the containing one. Take $B \in \mathcal{B}$ whose radius is also less than a fourth of the moat. Both $A'$ and $B$ intersect by assumption. That means that $B$ is strictly contained in $A$ with moat at least a fourth of the moat of $A'$ in $A$. Hence, $A$ is a Yes-ball of $\beta$.

\section{Fixed Point Theorem}
We will establish the fixed point theorem. First, we need to define the natural extension of a map $f: E \to E$ to a map $\overline{f} : \overline{E} \to \overline{E}$. Here we will content ourselves with extending contraction mappings. See the function oracle paper \cite{taylor23funora} for a more generalized notion.
A function $f: E \to E$ is a contractive mapping exactly when there exists a $k$ satisfying $0 < k < 1$ such that for all $x, y \in E$, $d(x,y) \leq k d(x,y)$. We are excluding $k=0$ as that is a constant map which, while trivial to extend, adds asides in some of the claims of strictly contained.
For such functions, we can naturally extend it to $\mathcal{O}_E$. We define $f(\alpha)$ for the oracle $\alpha$ to be the unique oracle in $\mathcal{O}_E$ defined by the rule that a ball is an $f(\alpha)$-Yes ball if it strictly contains the image of an $\alpha$-Yes ball or is a singleton contained in each. The notion of strictly contained for a general contained set in a ball $A$ is that the set is contained in another ball which is strictly contained in $A$.
We need to prove that this is an oracle, that it agrees with $f$ on $E$, and that it also is still a contractive mapping. The last two are fairly easy. Once $f(\alpha)$ is established to be an oracle, then $f(B[p, 0])$ is strictly contained in every ball that strictly contains the image of a Yes ball of the Oracle of $p$. But that image of a singleton is just $f(p)$. Thus, it is the oracle of $f(p)$. Hence, this agrees with $f$ on the embedded $E$ in the oracle space. To demonstrate it is a contractive mapping, let $\alpha$ and $\beta$ be given. Then given $\alpha$-Yes ball $A$ and $\beta$-Yes ball $B$, we have that the contraction applies to distances between sets, namely, $d(A,B) \leq k d(f(A), f(B))$. If we consider the smallest balls that contain $f(A)$ and, separately, $f(B)$, we see that the infimum of the distances between the images will satisfy that and that $\underline{d}(\alpha, \beta) \leq k \underline{d}(f(\alpha), f(\beta)) $.
Now we need to demonstrate the $f(\alpha)$, as defined above, is an oracle. A useful fact to observe is that if $A$ is a ball of radius $r$, then $f(A)$ will be contained in a ball of radius $kr$. One consequence of this is that if $A$ strictly contains $B$, then $f(A)$ is contained in a ball that strictly contains a ball containing $f(B)$. Indeed, $f(A)$ is contained in $B[f(c_A), kr_A]$ and $f(B)$ is contained in $B[f(c_B), kr_B]$. For example, if $p$ is in $A$, then $d(f(p), f(c_A)) \leq k d(p, c_A) \leq k r_A$. The moat of $f(B)$ in $f(A)$ is $k(r_A - d(c_A, c_B) - r_B)$ which is positive if the moat of $B$ in $A$ is.

If one starts with $x=1$, then $m=\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{m}{1-k} = \frac{1/2}{1 - 1/2} = 1$. \section{General Topological Spaces}
The concept of filter will be retained, namely, Consistency (containment going up), Existence, and Intersection. But the other properties will give us different results.
\section{OLD Other Topological Spaces}
We have defined oracles for the real numbers and oracles for being the completion points of a metric space. They have a common structure and some topology has crept in. We will now see what this kind of structure can do more generally.
There is a generic concept called a filter. When applied to collection of open sets, a filter is a collection that satisfies three properties: 1) The empty set is not in the collection and the collection is not the empty set; 2) if an open set contains an open set in the collection, then it too is in the collection; and 3) any two elements of the collection have a non-empty intersection (which is open). The first property is the Existence property; the second property is our Consistency property; and the third property is our Intersection property.
Oddly, the collection of sets is called a filter. It would make more sense to have our oracle rule be called the filter as it is a gate-keeping function that filters out the unwanted sets. In any case, the filter is the set of Yes open sets for a given limited oracle. A full oracle is one whose Yes sets form an ultrafilter, or maximal filter. These are the filters that are not contained in any other filters. If one thinks of these objects as zooming in on a particular point in a space, the non-ultrafilters are those that have not fully zoomed in. The zooming can also be in the direction of away from everything.
We will investigate three different kinds of oracles: 1) House Oracles, 2) Neighborly Oracles, 3) Outlying Oracles. The House Oracles replace the Rooted Oracles in non-Hausdorff spaces, i.e., spaces in which there exists a set of a single point which is not closed. The Neighborly Oracles are those which simulate missing House Oracles and are similar to the neighborly oracles above. The Outlying Oracles are new and they represent the oracles at the boundary or at infinity. They are used in producing a compact space.
All oracles from now on will be filters on the set of open sets.
\subsection{House Oracles}
We wish to explore the idea of a collection of points which cannot be disassociated by open sets. As often with topology, this intuition comes in a few different forms.
A common assumption is that a space is Hausdorff. This means that given any two points in the space, there are disjoint open sets containing them. If open sets represent ways of categorizing points together, this is a clear signal that these two points have been categorized as different. Metric spaces are Hausdorff and much of our intuition about topological spaces rests on this. These are the singleton oracles or rooted oracles.
But there are other such spaces. In particular, one can imagine a scenario where one wants to model a space where there are points clustered together but not detectable as such by the given open sets. We could either endeavor to get a finer topology that does distinguish them or one can abstract away the different points that cannot be distinguished. We give one way below fo proceeding.
Given a point $p$, the House of $p$ is the intersection of all closed sets containing $p$. It is not empty as $p$ is in it and the whole space is closed. We will write $H_p$ for the House of $p$. An \textbf{exclusive house} is one in which each member of the house has that house as its house as well. That is, if this is the House of $p$ and $q$ is in the House of $p$, then the House of $q$ is the same as the House of $p$.
A \textbf{well-housed space} is a space in which all houses are exclusive and, given any two houses, there are two open sets, each containing one of the houses, that are disjoint.
A housed oracle is the set of open sets that contain the given house. The space of house oracles over a space $X$ can be given a topology as follows: an open set is a set in which given any element $\alpha$ in the open set $\mathcal{O}$, there exists an $\alpha$-Yes open set $O_{\alpha}$ in $X$ such that if $p \in O_{\alpha}$, then the oracle of $H_p$ is in $\mathcal{O}$. For a well-housed space, this would lead to a Hausdorff space.
One can easily recognize that the house oracle space is a quotient space where the equivalence is that of being in an exclusive house.
This also suggests that given a space and an equivalence relation, we can define a space of oracles based on the open sets that contain elements of that equivalence class. We would use the same definition of an open set as above for the houses. This leads to the same topology as the usual quotient topology. Indeed, if you look at the quotient map from an element $x$ to an equivalence class oracle, then the inverse image of a set is

Other topological spaces can be handled in a similar fashion. This is even closer to the standard story of ultrafilters, but there is a subtle difference. Consistency, Existence, and Closed all apply without change. The containers in question are open sets plus the point-like sets. Two Point Separating still makes sense as does the intersection, but we can change this to directly be the intersection is a Yes open set since finite intersections of open sets are open. A point-like set is a set of points that are not distinguishable by being in different open sets. In a Hausdorff space, these are one-element sets. For non-Hausdorff spaces, this constructs a topological space which is Hausdorff and in which all the elements of a given point-like set are made to look like one point.
The new topology is such that if an oracle is in a set V, then there is a Yes open set in the original space for that oracle such that all of the oracles that this set is Yes for are included in the set V.
Is the space of all of these oracles not amenable to new oracles? Yes because open sets go to open sets and are contained in them so that given an oracle in the new new oracle space, the it actually defines an oracle in the first oracle space.
Can we argue for completion? The issue is that we do not have a notion of convergence. The tail can be trapped in open sets, but there is no notion of notionally shrinking. But the two point separation property can be applied to say that it is getting smaller. So convergent sequences or nets can be exactly those whose containment of the tail leads to an oracle. So rather than defining convergence and showing that there is an oracle, we instead define the oracle and therefore establish that it is convergent. How one would do that in a practical sense for an abstract space is beyond me.
Compactification requires changing the Two Point Separating and removing the closed property. The closed property gets replaced with some kind of exclusion of any given point. Somehow define a boundary or somehow say it does not exist and allow those points in, but not other points. Maybe something like, given a compact subset of the space, there must exist a Yes-open set that excludes the compact set. This forces it to be away. Not sure if the space of all such oracles it the Stone-Cech compactification. Would also want a criteria for saying that a collection of compactifying oracles has fully compactified the space.
One-point compactification: Any open set that is the complement of a compact set is Yes. It is compact as any open cover must include this new point and the open sets of that point are the Yes open sets. One of them is in the cover and thus it plus a finite covering of its matching compact set is a finite covering.
Two point compactification of R: Complement of a compact set intersected with the positives / negatives for the +oo / -oo. Similarly for (0,1) being to the left or right of 0, 1.
For anitpodal identification of the open disk, the criteria would be for a given line through the origin, complement of compact set intersected with open sets that contain the end segments of the line.
$f: X -> K$ a compact space, f continuous and onto. The oracles are then defined as $\alpha_k$ as the oracle such that it consists of $f^-1(V_k) \cap A^C$ where $A$ is compact, $A^C$ is its complement, $k$ is a point in $K$, and $V_k$ is an arbitrary open set in $K$ containing little $k$. That is, the open Yes-balls for $\alpha_k$ are the inverse images of neighborhoods of $k$ with a compact set in X removed.
Claim is that these oracles based on $f$ will form a compact space in addition to an already completed space.
Let an open cover of $X_f$ be given. We need to show it has a finite subcover. The elements $\alpha_k$ are contained in some element of this cover, possibly many. There is associated an open $V_k$ for $f$. Maybe we do that for every element including inner ones. Then $V_k$ is a cover of $K$ and thus there are finitely many of them. \subsection{Why the Moat?}

Our goal is to produce a mechanism that singles out a point which may not exist, in a unique way. We do this by considering the balls that contain the missing point. Since we are trying to model situations where the point being contained does not exist in the given space, we need to use properties to describe that without actually requiring containment. A key desire is that our description of this point is unique within what we are considering.
For example, let's consider the rational plane, $\mathbf{Q}\times \mathbf{Q}$. The point $(\sqrt{2}, 0)$ is not in this space, but the space is dense around it. We want to produce balls that contain it. of this is the set of circles $(x-b)^2 + y^2 = (1-b)^2$ for $b < 1$. These are all attached to the point $(0,1)$ though they do not contain it. If we did not insist on moated containment, then these would be a perfectly fine base for describing $(0,1)$. The circles of that form with $b > 1$ would be a distinct base also attached to and describing $(0,1)$. These two bases never overlap and must therefore give rise to distinct filters. This is where the insistence on strictly contained comes from in the oracle definition. To be clear, strictly contained is the insistence on a moat around the contained set.
We phrased containment using distances. This allows a space with a boundary to recover its boundary. For example, if the space is the interval $[0, 1]$, then a ball of radius, say, 100 is equal to a ball of radius 2 in terms of set containment because both are the entire space. But in our definition, the larger ball strictly contains the smaller one as the moat condition is satisfied. Since our primary concern is with making balls smaller, this condition should not impact any conclusion.
Related to this, our balls may have boundary points despite being open balls. As an example, consider again $[0,1]$ and a ball of radius $\frac{2}{3}$ centered at $\frac{1}{3}$. This ball will extend past the endpoint of the interval, $0$, and thus gets clipped there. These are perfectly acceptable in our setup. A ball of radius $\frac{1}{2}$ centered at $\frac{1}{3}$ will be strictly contained in the larger ball even though at the point $0$, there is no moat separating. This is not a problem with what we need.
We should also note that when defining real numbers as oracles, we used inclusive rational intervals, not exclusive ones. The difference is that the interval definition could always have its endpoints. With this approach using balls, if we were to have inclusive balls, there could be gaps on the boundary and the oracle may be modelling such a gap as a new point. That would then lead to a possible lack of overlapping balls modelling that same gap. We want to demand that other Yes-balls overlap. The counterexample to keep in mind is two sets of disks in the rational plane who have on their boundary the point $(0, \sqrt{2})$. These sets could be part of oracles using closed balls for $(0, \sqrt{2})$, but they would have no overlaps, losing the uniqueness that we seek from oracles. We handle this by prohibiting considering these ``closed'' disks. If we wanted to model this point, we would need to use open disks that surround where that point should be.
