why is the network so slow?

I'm getting 70-120 KB/sec inside webvm.io, when using my tailscale network, which from the outside host gets 4.5MB/sec. Why the 20-30x slow down?

Chrome 134 on Darwin Sonoma 14.0.

We are aware of a couple of issues in our network stack that result in low speeds.

Although I would expect something like 500KB/s on average.

The main issue is a low tcp window size, which is quite sensitive to the roundtrip time between you and the closest Derp server in your Tailnet.

Your native tcp stack has a greater window size, and likely does not use a Derp server at all as a relay.

We intend to improve the network performance in the medium term, so I will leave this issue open and report back when we get to it.
