Any way to set the initial selection in a menu button?

Getting great results from the excellent menu button. One problem I haven't figured out is how to set the initial selection. I tried setting aria-selected="true" on the menu item, but that gets cleared when the page loads: https://codepen.io/rsuk/pen/vJWEOR

Is there another way of setting the initial selection?
