Steve: It's probably something we want to be able to switch on and off, since I can anticipate situations where the text will get in the way of useful information, no matter where we overlay it. I suppose we could just do it as a title to the image, outside the image itself . . . or maybe "mouseover" text that pops up as a tooltippy sort of thing.
IZ: at certain zoom level, a text layer will show, with text for an image fitting in the item's image. Same (or another variable?) will be showing as a tooltip. What text to show, and whether to show it, will be specified during authoring, and possibly modified in Settings (and then saved as a cookie along with other Settings)
