in the installed-modules branch proto can't install itself

While installing "normal" modules seems to work, installing proto doesn't work:

Refreshing proto...Enter passphrase for key '/home/moritz/.ssh/id_rsa': 
updated
Building proto...built
Installing proto...cp: cannot stat `/home/moritz/tmp/proto/cache/proto/lib/*': No such file or directory

installed

./cache/proto doesn't exist. Also note that it says "installed" even though an error occured (and no file was added to the install location).
