How to best configure for finding nodes on the move

I would like to map the surrounding areas nodes while cycling to find stable repeaters or dead spots.

However I am not sure what the best way to discover nodes is. I can use smart position to send very frequent position pings, however these don't illicit responses afaik, even for unknown nodes.

So what people seem to do in practice is spam the public channel to "ping" nodes.

Is there a proper way to discover nodes on the go?
