I did compile and try develop, same result. I then just commented out the scanPort call here in main.cpp:

And then it starts properly.

Unless you got it to work with previous firmware versions, it sounds like a hardware problem.

Do you have any I²C devices (sensors etc) connected?
If no, can you check the voltage on the I²C lines with a multimeter?

They should be at >2.0V, usually at 3.3V.

If they're not, check for shorts to GND and check if the pull-up resistors are present.

It has worked before. Nothing is connected to i2c:

• 2.7.15 works
• 2.7.17 works
• 2.7.18 works
• 2.7.19 works

Update your bootloader

Ok, my bootloader was 0.6.1 but the .uf2 method did not want to work, even though allegedly it should if its above 0.3.x. After updating to 0.10 using adafruit-nrfutil the 2.7.20 FW works fine.

Just out of curiosity, how come it works when I compile my own FW from develop?

Just to help others here, i had to upgrade my XIAO nrf52840 bootloader from linux commandline like this:
python ~/.platformio/packages/tool-adafruit-nrfutil/adafruit-nrfutil.py dfu serial --package xiao_nrf52840_ble_bootloader-0.10.0_s140_7.3.0.zip -p /dev/ttyACM0 -b 115200 --singlebank --touch 1200

specifically finding how the python script is used internally took me a while :-)
