compile_resources, from qt module, doesn't accept resources generated with custom_target

I'm using meson 1.5.1 and this is my demo code:

translations_qrc = custom_target(
	'translations-qrc',
	output: 'translations.qrc',
	command: [
		PYTHON_EXECUTABLE,
		SCRIPTS.get(1), # gen_translations_qrc.py
		lrelease_executable, # native lrelease path
		'../../translations', # dir with ts files
		'@OUTPUT@' # name of qresource with qms to be embeded
	]
)

translations_cpp = QT_MOD.compile_resources(sources: translations_qrc)

Meson dumps:

ERROR: Unable to parse resource file /path/translations.qrc

The docs say compile_resources can accept custom_target as sources, so any ideas?
