This issue usually occurs if your phone doesn't have a passcode set.

If it does have a password set, try replugging your phone with it unlocked on the home screen and make sure you click trust if it appears on your phone.

Actually didn't see that itunes said unknown error occured. Try using a geniune apple cable and ensure your USB port on your computer and the charging port on your phone work properly to transmit data
