"Snap to grid when document grid is defined" is an option that change the space between lines, also of latin script, BUT is visible in MS Word Paragraph dialog ONLY when a CJK language is installed.
Only if you have chinese, japanese... in the available languages, you can see the option in the Paragraph dialog.

I noted that my (new or modified) XWPF documents are impacted by this option: I get higher space between lines (in plain English text).
Before to load the document, lines are close each other. After downloading the document there is larger space between lines.
I used sources from npoi-examples.
I found also a kind of a workaraound

But is easer to uncheck the option in MS Word.
