any particular reason Arudino IDE lists 2.34.22 as the latest version?

I can't find "relases" on this github either. or any instructions on how to install it from github instead of the IDE ?

Indeed 2.34.22 is the latest stable release for u8g2: https://github.com/olikraus/U8g2_Arduino
