I've been working my way back to 5.3.3 to see when it broke, since it did work on that release.

I just rolled back to 5.3.3 which works.
5.3.3 uses form element "<input class=..."
later uses customElements: <ob-field-number data-edit="" class="year_field"></ob-field-number>

This is likely due to nvm/npm versions (not php). Most other projects that use nvm/npm specify a version to use. The current versions are:

$ nvm -v      
0.40.3
$ npm -v 
11.6.2

which likely have an issue with customElements.
