Difference between a secret stored in nilVM & in nilDB

I am not able to understand from the docs, what is the difference in data stored in nilVM vs data stored in secrets vault

nilVM: Temporary and tied to runtime execution.
nilDB: Long-term storage and retrieval.

NilDB is a built on top of MongoDB so you can set your permissions however you like with your schemas.
