How does pybricks actually function on the spike prime

I'm very intressted in pybricks as I'm considering creating something similar but far simpler as a school project with the spike prime. Therefore I have some technical questions:

• What exactly is it running on the spike prime hub? Is it a micro-python vm running it's bytecode or is it more like a firmeware?
• How does the flashing process work and are there some manuals you found helpful when developing for the spike prime?
