We're making fast progress towards launching a proof-of-concept BTC NFT collection at the end of November. That's just over 5 weeks away.

Starting next week we're opening up the working group calls to the public so that anyone can join in and contribute.

We have two weekly recurring calls right now:

Goals recap

Proof-of-concept product

• Bitcoin Faces:
  • Unique NFT for each Bitcoin address
  • Attributes all stored on-chain
  • Minted in one transaction w/ Bitcoin
  • 21m total supply of NFTs
  • $25 per NFT
  • % of proceeds to BTC devs / regulatory seizures protection
  • No roadmap of utility
• Aiming to launch in 5 weeks
• There are many ways that these faces could be used to give visual identity to addresses/transactions
  • On explorers
  • A Twitter bots that shows when whales transact w/ their faces
  • @bruffstar will look into this task and potentially take ownership
• Having such a large supply (21m) means that we need to have many attributes. This also means that it may be harder to make each one look unique. This is a very important job for the artist.
• We are still in need of some support on the front-end of this product
  • Designer that can punch up UX wireframe
  • Designer + front-end dev would be ideal
  • @bruffstar may be able to help here as well
• Distribution
  • Current focus is on getting people on Twitter using these avatars and talking about this:
    1. Having a very simple share UX during minting flow
    2. Having some partnerships with large Bitcoin Twitter accts to be examples (use avatar and talk about it)
    3. Leverage the org we are donating to to talk about the project and pull in notable figures to talk on Twitter spaces
  • Gamma will make this a default pfp for BTC profiles on Gamma. Could potentially add BTC transfers in the activity tab
• Artwork
  • It might be worth having a hi-fi version of the artwork that you can download if you mint yours NFT
  • James’ artwork is quite complex and file size could be too large for SVG embeds
• Ensuring that other teams use this technology once we’ve successfully showcased it
  • Building a toolkit for devs
  • Ileana ideating on ways to attract artist and teams

Hey @markmhx good question! The structure we're looking at now would involve creating a HTLC script similar to Magic Bridge's flow, where the outcomes can go one of two ways:

• successful mint: the person performing the TX on the Stacks side can spend the BTC using the preimage hash (secret/password)
• unsuccessful mint: the timer runs out (generally done by number of blocks) and the user can spend the BTC

It would be similar to the process listed here for recovering inbound swaps.

Timeline

• 4 weeks until our target launch date of Nov 30th!
• Great progress across the board. We must keep up a fast pace.

Technical

• Current milestone: Mint a Bitcoin Colors NFT using a Bitcoin TX by Nov 14th
• That exact date for this milestone will be confirmed during this Thursday’s technical meeting at 8am PT
• Categories have been created in Github to organize the technical work streams

Front-end

  • We’ve been ironing out the Twitter share loop, which is crucial to our distribution strategy.
  • It’s ideal to have a demo ‘reveal’ on the homepage like preloading Satoshi’s address. Most people won’t have their BTC address handy and be willing to dig it up right away.
• Social proof
  • The landing page could show the NFTs already minted, with their respective numbers. Basically a marquee to showcase the NFTs so people have a better understanding. People could also share out other people’s NFTs this way (i.e. clickthrough the NFT and then share).
  • Gamma will have a collection page for this too
  • Similarly, on the ‘share’ version of the permalink page it would be ideal to have a showcase of a bunch of Tweets (ideally from notable Twitter crypto people)

Artwork

• Artist got sick with covid last week but we should have some artwork to look at later this week!

Donation organization

• We want to donate a portion of all revenue to a great Bitcoin related organization
• Key criteria:
  • They have good distribution (to help raise awareness of the project)
  • They are trusted (so we don’t need to manage anything ongoing)
  • Their mission is compelling and fits into our Bitcoin narrative
• We’ve spoken to OpenSats and CoinCenter so far

• Based on Jason’s research most BTC wallets by default do not allow users to select their sending address, which means they won’t be able to mint the NFT that they reveal
• Thus it’s better for us to remove that step (which also simplifies the flow) and instead just let users mint a random NFT based on the sending address
  - Important open question: Do we need wallet support for launch?
• Xverse will have a beta browser extension in the coming weeks (?). Ken created a Github issue for required work: Support BTC Transfer Requests hirosystems/connect#283
• Hiro will have BTC support for their wallet by Q1 2023

Back-end:

• The current internal milestone is to mint a demo Bitcoin NFT by November 14th
• We’re making progress but it’s unclear if we can hit that date. This is going to be the focus of this Thursday’s technical call (8am PT).

Timeline

• Our initial launch date for Bitcoin Faces was targeted for November 30th.
• Given the open questions around technical implementation, we are expecting to delay the launch by at least 1-2 weeks.
• That moves our expected launch window to Dec 1-15th. We will get more specific about a launch day in the coming week.

Back-end & UX

• The main bottleneck right now is on the technical side – particularly the UX for minting these NFTs

• Jason ran the group through our current options for minting:

1. Users onboard directly into an Xverse wallet, fund that wallet with BTC and then mint an NFT
2. More advanced users send from a Bitcoin wallet of their preference that allows them to choose the sending address (so they can send another tx later on to verify ownership)

• Both of these flows have more friction than we had originally wanted but seem to be the best options given technical limitations
• Consensus from the group is that both UX flows should be built out together to give users optionality
• It’s best to give hardcore bitcoiners something to appeal to them
• Wallet timelines:
• Xverse to launch desktop wallet beta in coming weeks
• Xverse to add ledger support in Q1 of 2023
• Hiro to launch BTC support in Q1 of 2023
• The question is raised whether these approaches still validate and serve the original goal for the project?
• The group answer appears to be yes but that it’s worthwhile to consider any possible ways of reducing friction in the first 1-3 steps for the user
• Larry proposed again an idea for generating wallets & seed phrases through the website to collapse down steps
• “We think the target market won’t want to adopt a new wallet but they may be willing to use a web wallet to make this transaction.”
• The main argument against this is that it is less secure, which may be an argument to attack the project

User Experience

• We have narrowed down the UX into an MVP that we’re ready to start building

• Is there a clever status game we can incorporate to incentivize people to mint their NFT? (ie. rewarding early adopters)
• Do we want to adjust the total supply of this collection to create more scarcity?

Timeline

• Now that we have conviction in an MVP to launch we are considering what a realistic launch date is
• Given upcoming holidays it will likely need to be either Dec 15 or Jan 15
• Dec 15 is the target date to have the technical components complete
• Jan 15 is the likely date for a public marketing launch

Technical workload:

• Ken + team can help with wallet generation code
• Larry may be able to help with mapping addressing to NFT. Could create a standard that others can use.
• Jason to share a summary of the technical workload so that everyone can contribute and claim responsibilities

• If we want to further simply we could remove the generate and claim step but we believe that it will severely limit how many people will interact with the avatars because the drop-off rate for adopting a new wallet will be too high.

Yes, they could technically go through the process with their own wallet, but it would require more advanced steps to complete the mint correctly, mainly some form of "coin control" in order to send from the correct UTXO in the claim step.

With that in mind, having them setup an Xverse wallet first then fund it from the wallet of their choice is the main method we're looking for users to use in the process. This greatly simplifies the number of variables around the mint, and gives users a consistent experience from start to finish.

Yes, that is something we've discussed but changes haven't made it into the wireframes. We won't know the NFT ID, but we can use this space to show the originating BTC address used to generate the NFT, and possibly some additional facts about it (e.g. this characteristic is what resulted in this attribute, or this is rare because...).

As for the Bitcoin Faces launch, Gamma is interested in hosting the project under their brand and we're now determining how we will resource the front-end build with help from Jamil and Brian.

• limit the collection size to 500 (or less) and potentially focus only on manually created artwork vs algorithmically generated

How I think we can provide value to this Work Group:
Reading through some of the goals of the workgroup, I believe that our Team can contribute some level of value to the objectives of this work group with capabilities in: game dev, metaverse dev, artwork (our artwork is super cute and differentiating :D), creator automation, NFT strategy, product management, and design.

We are working on tooling and items to bring value to all NFT Creators across chains by giving them the ability to go to our Creator Portal to self-manage their Branded / Custom Metaverse, and onboard themselves and their community easily by dropping a zip of their 3D Assets to deploy their own branded experience for their Token Communities. That's our ideal experience that we're working toward! The Creator Portal is going to be jam packed with Analytics. I've attached a lo-fi mockup of what we seek to achieve with our Creator Portal.

Progress toward Bitcoin support for Hiro and Xverse

• initial steps are BTC transfer requests and Ordinal Inscription storage
• taproot addresses will be used solely for inscriptions to start
• CTA: help with testnet testing! send some tBTC around!

Would like to expand reach of the BNS discussions, particularly around inscribing zone files and a standard that would work for the current and future iterations of the ecosystem.

• @mechanismHQ built bns.xyz to allow generating a signed zone file for inscription
• @larrysalibra started the BNS v2 strategy doc with more information
• CTA: it would be helpful to invite ambassadors from individual groups, e.g. BNSDao, BNSx, and others to weigh in on standards

  • supports native segwit but not taproot at this time
• Taproot is not supported by BIP322, other related discussions:
  • Trezor / AOPP: Implement message signing for Taproot trezor/trezor-firmware#1943
  • Ord ownership proofs: https://github.com/casey/ord/issues/1462
  • Nosft BIP322 integration: Add Bip-322 signing to verify ownership of address deezy-inc/deezy-place#71
• this feature would be huge for marketplaces (and other integrations)

For next meeting, we'd like to discuss how to enable more support for different address types.

• at launch, taproot was for inscriptions, native segwit for normal operation
• as usage increases, it's harder to keep this distinction, e.g. a user sends BTC or an inscription to the wrong address
• we should agree on how wallets will handle this moving forward so it is consistent
