In keyboard settings, "Touch bar shows" is set to "extended control strip".
Mute icon doesn't show up in this mode.

I have this problem too. Related, it would be amazing if the button could show up in the extended control strip.

@eexit @vignesarul @mrdanbrooks that's currently not possible because Apple does not provide that API to add your own app to global extended control strip. Maybe it will be in High Sierra release.
