Although the canonical URL is now part of the contao core, this addon is still useful – to use special canonical tags on different news entries. The core does not offer this, yet, when I am right.
But it does not seem to work correctly: Now both tags are set in the frontend, the one with the setting for the page with the news-reader and the one for the news item.
In addition it is a bit confusing, that there is the core input and this addons input on pages in parallel...
