Summary:

  • EL9 images released for first time, including RHEL9, Centos Stream 9, and Oracle Linux 9.

  • Updated amazon builders to use new ebssurrogate feature that will build to a secondary volume and then swap the root volume for the secondary volume. This eliminates the need to pivot-root to inherit options associated to the source image, such as the Red Hat license (for the RHEL images). It also significantly reduces transient errors and race conditions in the build process.

  • Uses the new amazon packages from the spel repo, rebased on Amazon Linux 2023. This also adds several new amazon packages to EL7/EL8/EL9 images, if they are installed by default in AL2023.

Summary:

  • Installs python39 to EL8 images. Previously, python36 was installed to EL8. Now, python36 is installed only to EL7, and python39 is installed to EL8.

  • Restores builds for Oracle Linux 8. As part of the investigation, it was realized that at some point, probably the 8.7 release, Oracle Linux became unable to resolve weak dependencies (those marked in an rpm spec file as "Recommends"). This is a problem because RHEL8 and all other EL8 derivatives do install weak dependencies by default. To fix the OL8 builds, dependencies used expliclity by the build process were added as "extra" packages. It is probably good overall to explicitly list such dependencies, anyways. However, this also means it is likely that the OL8 images vary significantly from RHEL8 and other EL8 derivatives. Be aware of this delta, and use caution if your expectation is that the OL8 images are package-equivalent to the RHEL8 images!

  • Separates EL7 and EL8 input arguments for amigen extra packages. This allowed installing different versions of python3 to EL7 vs EL8, as well as restoring builds for OL8.
