There is a sizable medical & psychological literature that studies the connection between unemployment and suicide. Here are a few good references:

• Platt (1984)
• Dooley, Fielding, and Levi (1996)
• Agerbo (2003)
• Wanberg (2012)

There is much more out there, which you can track down on Google Scholar, but this is a good place to start.
