When creating backport releases it requires currently manual intervention. This "manual intervention" is the creation of a branch based on the release to build this backporting release on top of and later to trigger the release action. Backporting basically should be done by creating a pull request and then having some kind of bot that creates the branch. The release action then should work as well for the release branch.
