External DNS integration? #3999

So based on #2499 it seems like external DNS integration is set up, but I am a bit confused on how it works.

Will external DNS just pick up on the virtualhost.fqdn (with the ingress source set in external-dns)? Or do I have to do annotations?

Any clarify here would be awesome!
