Request: decrease slant of italic numerals #287
Comments
The slant of the lining tabular numbers is about the same as that of lowercase and uppercase letters: a smidge more than i and m, a smidge less than I and H. Some fonts appear to slant the numbers a little less than the letters, while some give the numbers about the same slant. Given the amount of work involved in changing the slant of the numbers (at a quick count, there are thirteen sets of them), I'd like to invite comment on this issue before I do anything. Meanwhile, can I ask what version of Junicode you're using and which of the major sets of numbers you're talking about (lining tabular, lining proportional, lowercase tabular, lowercase proportional)? |
Dear Professor Baker,
thanks for responding so quickly! Let me say first that I deeply
admire your work on Junicode, which, for me, is an irreplaceable tool:
a universal workhorse which is nevertheless beautiful, a most welcome
liberation from the soulless MS Office standards...
I meant lowercase proportional figures in standard italics (but maybe
there is an analogical problem in other italic styles, I just don't
use them enough (or at all) to have a formed opinion). I have just
downloaded the newest version (with added weights etc.) of the font,
but in this respect at least it looks the same as the old,
four-styles-only one.
I've attached a PDF to document what I mean. Of course individual letters
and figures differ slightly in their angles of slant, but the general
impression of the figures is that their slant is overall slightly greater than
that of the italic letters: in the context of a text set in italics,
they appear -- at least to my eyes -- to be "leaning forward" too
much. This is expecially apparent in the very last line of my example.
Anyway, whether you decide to change this or not -- a great thank you
for your work!
Lukas

Sorry about the PDF, I simply attached it to the e-mail message but it
does not work like that, it seems.
But yes: the picture you sent fixes it, but now the feel is right!
Thank you, this is incredible swiftness! Hats off.
Best,
Lukas

… I couldn't find the PDF, but I get the picture. After comparing the
lowercase proportional numbers with lowercase letters, it seems
appropriate to straighten them a little. Mostly I've straightened by
two degrees, but sometimes more, depending on the look. Doing this
changes the metrics, so I'm going to have to check over that, and
also adjust the lowercase tabular numbers to match. So there's still
a bit to do. Here's the current state of it:

I've posted a release with the fixes I've made so far to the default figures. I'll keep this open as a reminder that there's more to be done. |
I am using Junicode for typesetting a scholarly journal more than 2 decades and I would appreciate decreasing the angle of slanting of italic numerals: I usually apply a character style that slants them to the left (i.e., reduces the slant) by 4%. Try that and you will see that this way they harmonize much better with the slope of the italic letters.
