It looks like this project is dead because there are no commits into this repo since 2018,

But there is a bunch of packages which provide more options than this one:

Customized version number template
Allows to use full commit SHA or current branch name in this template
Separated templates for tagged commit, next commits after tagged one and unstashed/dirty changes (Add 'dirty' flag feature #19)
Initial version if there are no tags in the current branch (Error message confusing if a tag is missing #3)
Development releases (prereleases) support

My package https://github.com/dolfinus/setuptools-git-versioning handles all these features and even more than that.
