I picked the name "Gunship" on a whim when I started working on the project. I still think it's a fine name but I'm not sure it meshes well with my goals for the project. If I get to the point where there are other developers working on this project I want to make sure that the project is as open and inclusive as possible, and I worry the name "Gunship" is too aggressive and militaristic in that regard. It also carries the implication that the engine is more oriented towards war games which has never been a design goal. I'd like to look at some possible alternatives while the project is young since it will be easiest to change the official name when nobody knows about it.

Idea: Color Cube. It has the added advantage of having a (relatively) easy logo. Also could be a good studio name.

Idea: Babbage.
Better idea: Lovelace (Ada probably is better, but that could get confusing with the programming language).

I'm writing a series of articles titled "Building A (Better) Game Engine" which abbreviates to "BA(B)GE" which sounds like "Babbage". Considering that Charles Babbabe was one of the forebears of computer science "Babbage" seems like a good option.

That said, if we're going down the route of "forbears of computer science" I think Ada Lovelace makes for an even better namesake (since I'm loathe to name yet another think after an old, dead, white guy). "Ada" stands out me as the better name, but to avoid confusion "Lovelace" works as well.

In that same vein, "Analytical" or "Analytical Engine" would be fun.
