Do you think it would be possible to overcome this limitation by using Geometry Nodes and the mesh Attributes system? As far as I know we can have "infinite" custom attributes that could to store the UV data.
I haven't looked at the code yet, but it might be very possible, even if we need the UV Map specifically, we could use a "converter" GN and a "buffer" UVMap etc.
