There needs to be some way to deal with the enemies, as players find them frustrating & they provide no educational value.
One consideration is to allow the player to eliminate the bugs by standing still. When the moving bug encounters the still player, the bug should be defeated without any (with little? scaled by resistance?) energy cost to the player.
This would allow players to stand still and read code without dealing with dangers, while also preventing them from speeding through levels rapidly.
