Validation States

The docs state:

In the future, data attribute selectors will be replaced with custom states such as :state(valid) and :state(invalid). Web Awesome is using data attributes as a workaround until browsers fully support custom states.

Just an FYI, according to MDN and CanIUse, this has been supported across all major browsers since May of 24.

Well, that's what polyfills and ancient.css is for, right? 😄

Sure, but states can't be polyfilled without using a fallback attribute :(
