Description
Summary
Story Architect (starc.app) is an open-source (freemium) writing tool that released v0.8.0 in December 2025. It supports screenplays, novels, comic books, plays, and audio drama in one tool. It imports Final Draft (.fdx), DOCX, Fountain, and Celtx formats. Late 2025 updates added showrunner tools.
This is Kindling's most relevant emerging competitor because it occupies the same niche: open-source, cross-format, novel+screenplay support. It currently has more GitHub activity and a broader format portfolio.
Tracking Issue — Not Code Work
This is an informational/strategic tracking issue, not a development task.
Action Items
- Track STARC feature development and user growth quarterly
- Note: STARC is freemium (free tier + paid cloud/collaboration). Kindling's fully-free MIT model is a differentiator
- Consider adding "Kindling vs Story Architect" section to compare page if STARC gains meaningful traction
- Monitor potential integration opportunity: import from STARC format (.starc) if it gains adoption
- Watch for STARC's novel-writing improvements — their screenplay support is stronger than novel support currently
