One of the frequently recurring FAQs is related to using NCU on a Windows machine.

Newton Connection Utilities (NCU) and other similar applications work with Windows, but a utility called Slowdown is required to make it work reliably for larger file transfers. Once loaded you just click the “install package” button. The package will be installed on your Newton under the “unfiled icons” tab. Go there and shift it to the one that logically suits you. Sometimes several instances of the program need to run concurrently to slow the machine down sufficiently. The correct number can only be found by experimentation. On a 1 GHz machine with 256Mb of memory, three instances work, with the top slider all the way to the right. Beware, too many can cause the machine to freeze up for unacceptably long periods. That‚s all there is to it. There are no “setup files” as in Windows. The program is usually in “*.pkg” format.
