Introduction

Webots is a free and open-source robot simulation software released under the terms of the Apache 2.0 license. It has been originally developed at the EPFL since 1996 and then by Cyberbotics Ltd. since 1998. Originally, Webots was a proprietary software, but it was turned to free and open-source software in December 2018. Since then, the Webots github repository became very successful in the open source robotics community with more than 250K downloads of the 1GB installation packages, hundreds of forks and stars, numerous contributions and questions, etc.

Why your sponsorship is important

Without any support from the community we won't be able to continue the following tasks:

  • maintain the software:
    • ensure that it works on the lasted versions of operating systems (on mac OS, Linux and Windows).
    • ensure that it works with the latest versions of third party software (ROS, ROS2, Python, Java, gcc, MATLAB, etc.)
    • correct bugs reported by users.
    • fix and keep the documentation up-to-date.
  • support users:
    • answer technical questions from users of Webots.
    • help contributors to write pull requests and review such pull requests.
    • improve the documentation (including video tutorials).
  • develop new features:
    • implement features needed by a large number of users.
    • implement features specified on our development roadmap.

How can you support Webots?

  • spend your time helping us with the above tasks.
  • ask your organization to mandate us for some specific developments or other consulting activity.
  • invite us as a partner in your EU research project proposal.

Having at least 10 sponsors would be a first milestone, meaning there is some interest from the open source robotics community to financially support the Webots software via the GitHub Sponsor program.
