I'm building open-source infrastructure for investigative journalism:
foiacquire automates the tedious parts of FOIA research - scraping government archives, running OCR on scanned documents, and making everything searchable. It pulls from FBI Vault, CIA Reading Room, MuckRock, DocumentCloud, and custom sources.
muckrake turns documents into investigations - extracting people, organizations, and relationships, then linking every claim back to source documents with page numbers and text spans.
Together, they're a platform that lets one person do what used to require a research team.
Why I'm building this
I wanted to do investigative journalism but didn't have the training or resources. So I started building the tools I wished existed. If I can use them to investigate, so can local journalists, researchers, and anyone who cares about transparency.
What sponsorship supports
- Full-time development on foiacquire + muckrake
- Integration between the two tools
- Better documentation for non-technical users
- Keeping everything open source and free
Current status
foiacquire is functional with multi-source scraping, OCR, full-text search, and a web UI. muckrake is in early development - data model designed, implementation underway. Working toward a production-ready integrated platform.
