usage with cabal.project breaks when trying to use external dependencies that depend on internal packages

there's also the issue that you have to add library profiling to allow for external deps to depend on deps that are in the internal repo, so I guess it has something to do with that.

Yeah as I said you have to delete the .git and git init at the directories. Then it should work :3

Please do. I'm planning to add a github bug report template that will ask users to submit a nix build ... repro for all non-trivial bug reports.
