<h2 class="label"><a name="statement"><span>Research Statement</span></a></h2>
Automatic generation of programs has long been a fundamental challenge in computer science. Large language models
(LLMs), through extensive pre- and post-training, have gained exceptional code reasoning and generation capabilities.
This advancement has already sparked significant research interest and practical applications, leading to models
excelling in competitive programming, code completion services used daily by millions of developers, and agents
capable of autonomously addressing GitHub issues. Our group has previously pioneered the area of deep learning for
program synthesis, and we are excited to further our exploration in this space with more advanced models.
<br><br>
A fundamental limitation of LLMs in programming is their inability to provide formal guarantees on functional
correctness and security. Our research aims to address this and enable high assurance in LLMs-based code generation.
We plan to leverage machine learning techniques to improve LLMs’ capabilities in reasoning, generalization, and
search. Moreover, we will incorporate formal methods, such as type systems and program verification, to establish
formal guarantees in the generated code.
<br><br>
We are also eager to examine the implications of LLMs on cybersecurity, given these models’ strong coding skills and
potential dual use. Our focus will include rigorous benchmarking of LLMs in offensive security tasks, such as
vulnerability discovery and exploitation. Additionally, we will investigate how LLMs can contribute to the automation
of defense strategies, including patch generation, security recommendation, and secure system design.
<br><br>
Ultimately, we believe that solving the above challenges is a promising step towards achieving AGI (artificial general
intelligence) and mitigating the risks associated with it.
