In my opinion, no amount of reorganizing or culling channels will solve the problem of users finding things overwhelming. It's my view that it will always be overwhelming by its nature, to some degree. What people need to do is learn the CTRL + K keybinding, which is something I only recently just learned after A13 mentioned using it offhand on Innovation Coffee
Using this has made my life using the Discord massively easier, so it'll likely have the same impact on others who learn it, especially for such a massive Discord channel that discusses many different topics and has a large list of channels.
Searching by Category
We could simply introduce them in the Welcome channel to these core groups of categories, for example here would be my preferred list:
Keeping the names short, lowercase, single-worded (no hyphens) and memorable keeps them relevant and makes certain that people won't struggle to find what they want by category. It also means they have to type less when using the CTRL + K keybinding. In other words, if you would not use it as name for a folder on your computer, it's probably not a good name. Emojis are a plus, since they visually represent what the channels are for!
As an example I have chosen need as a replacement for looking-for The channels could then be called whatever they want to be called, as people would be searching by category and not by channel name.
The state at the moment is that the category is somewhat less important and ignored since it repeats what is already stated in the channel names.
Here I search for socialize, which returns all of the text channels in the category. If we teach people a core group of categories they will have no issue finding what they want, as there will be no need to scroll through the endless list on the left.

Thanks for taking the time to summarize all of this! We are going to check it out and will update here once we find a clever way to get the information to members on the server. I like your idea of including some sort of instruction in the "Welcome" channel... Definitely going to explore this option and others.
