FEATURE REQUEST: (even more) automated installer

lowk i would love to host/run an instance of the install.sh so i can just curl it and install it automatically

maybe something like

curl -fsSL https://dwmbar.example.domain/install.sh | bash

i would be the sole maintainer of this, so theres no upkeep, it would just pull from this repo so its set and forget

Missed the point in my groggy state this morning. The install.sh in the repo today only runs if you're already in the repo, so that's not really the easy clean solution you're asking for.

If you want to host an install.sh that's perfectly fine by me, though I would request that the install script be open source and easily available.

I also think as probably this project's most faithful user 😳 you might be more informed than I to make the decision on how to host it, but if you want it in this repo so you can just grab it with the above one-liner I'll happily approve that PR.

I like your idea of doing it directly with GH but.. that's crazy long/complicated for when I'm being lazy..

The install.sh with my domain and the install.sh with the repo are pretty different, the install.sh in your script assumes you're already cloned the repo. My install.sh assumes nothing, and makes a temp directory, clones the repo in the temp dir, does the normal install, then removes the temp dir

The URLs are obviously free and open to look at, but if you wish we could even just host it on github pages with a pages branch or something so the code is entirely in the repo (optional)

Hmm, tbh if you're free to look at the script then there's not really any problems.

Cloudflare is down at the moment so your site is ded :) same thing's happened to me.

You could add this to the repo as a supported installation option, though I think we should add a disclaimer reminding people they should always check scripts before executing them. Also, if they're running an esoteric system like NixOS or LFS then we expect them to know what they're doing. We can't support everything lol

oof what bad timing with cloudflare, we (me) can potentially make the install.sh auto check out the system (smt like hostnamectl or if the system is weird like nix), and if its one of the supported ones install auto, but if not, we say "sorry but your system may not be supported for the automatic install, please refer back to the documentation to install dwmbar"

yeah deffo make people aware of what they're doing when they do the install

I think letting them do it anyway is fine - but just make sure they've been warned in the readme. Pretty sure if you tried to install it on nixos it would fail to move the exec anyway since /usr/bin is readonly.

We just assume that /usr/bin exists so as long as the system has that it'll probably work.
