Is it an option to show the (first 7 characters of the) git hash as a version? This way it is always clear which version of the source code is running.

So mainly the output of git rev-parse --short HEAD

That's a good point.
I guess most would want to know which docker version are we running, bu developers might be interested in the git commit hash, so in that case, we can provide the commit hash of the UI as well.
