restart-services \- restart services after an upgrade
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B restart-services [ -hsa ]
.SH DESCRIPTION
The
.B restart-services
program tries to determine if there are processes in the system
that need to be restarted after a system upgrade by calling
\fIcheckrestart\fR\|(1) and then restarts them. This can be necessary since
an upgrade will usually install new system libraries and running processes
will still be using the old versions of the libraries. In \fIstable\fP
Debian GNU/Linux systems this is typically needed to eliminate a system
exposure to a vulnerability which might have been fixed by upgrading a
library which that process makes use of.

Consequently,
.B restart-services
is used as a tool to find outdated versions of libraries in use, and to
restart the respective services that are still using them, particularly
after security upgrades.  Administrators should not, however, rely on it
completely (see the \fBBUGS\fP section of the \fIcheckrestart\fR\|(1)
manpage).

This script needs to run as root in order to obtain the information it needs
for analysis and to restart the services.

.BI -h, --help
Show the program help and exit.

.TP
.BI -s, --simulate
Don't change anything, just print out what would be done.

.BI -a
Tell restart-services that it is being run by apt-get: add headers to output.

.SH EXIT STATUS

The program will exit with error (1) if it couldn't restart services
and with warning (2) if there were programms running that it could
not figure out how to restart. Otherwise, it will always exit with
error status 0.

for possible problems with restart-services.
