It the sync with google drive worked perfectly for a few days but when I tried opening the book on my laptop this morning I got this error instead.

Error loading book: Received Status 0

It seems that the second XHR to fetch the file contents fails with net::ERR_FAILED eventhough the request itself results in a 200 OK response.

Solution:
Closing the browser seemed to have worked. Even a refresh didn't work so maybe a cache related issue?
