Render JSON string values with real newlines. Preview \n, \t, \r escape sequences as formatted, human-readable text in a side panel. Auto-activates on .json files — zero configuration needed.
Tired of reading
\nas literal text in JSON files? This extension fixes that.
JSON files from API responses, CRM exports, support ticket systems, issue trackers, log files, and webhook payloads contain string fields with embedded escape sequences. VS Code shows \n as literal text, making email bodies, descriptions, and multi-line content impossible to read.
This is a long-requested feature with no built-in solution.
Before — raw JSON in VS Code editor:

}After — JSON String Viewer side panel:

No. The extension is read-only — it only renders a preview. Your JSON file is never modified.
Yes. It parses the full file and renders all fields. For very large files (10MB+), the initial render may take a moment.
Currently it supports standard .json files. JSONL support is planned.
It activates on VS Code's json language mode. JSONC files should work if VS Code recognizes them as JSON.
Formatters (like Prettier) re-indent the JSON but don't render escape sequences. \n remains as literal \n text. This extension actually shows newlines as line breaks.
